When Same-Sex Marriage Was a Christian Rite

Contrary to myth, Christianity's concept of marriage has not been set in stone since the days of Christ, but has constantly evolved as a concept and ritual. Prof. John Boswell, the late Chairman of Yale University’s history department, discovered that in addition to heterosexual marriage ceremonies in ancient Christian church liturgical documents, there were also ceremonies called the "Office of Same-Sex Union" (10th and 11th century), and the "Order for Uniting Two Men" (11th and 12th century).

These church rites had all the symbols of a heterosexual marriage: the whole community gathered in a church, a blessing of the couple before the altar was conducted with their right hands joined, holy vows were exchanged, a priest officiatied in the taking of the Eucharist and a wedding feast for the guests was celebrated afterwards. These elements all appear in contemporary illustrations of the holy union of the Byzantine Warrior-Emperor, Basil the First (867-886 CE) and his companion John.

2 Kings 23:7, "And he brake down the houses of the sodomites, that were by the house of the LORD, where the women wove hangings for the grove."
3. The Prophets of the Old Testament Speak Against it:

Isaiah 1:9, "Except the LORD of hosts had left unto us a very small remnant, we should have been as Sodom, and we should have been like unto Gomorrah."

Isaiah 3:9, "The shew of their countenance doth witness against them; and they declare their sin as Sodom, they hide it not. Woe unto their soul! for they have rewarded evil unto themselves."

Isaiah 13:19, "And Babylon, the glory of kingdoms, the beauty of the Chaldees' excellency, shall be as when God overthrew Sodom and Gomorrah."

Lamentations 4:6, "For the punishment of the iniquity of the daughter of my people is greater than the punishment of the sin of Sodom, that was overthrown as in a moment, and no hands stayed on her."

Ezekiel 16:49, "Behold, this was the iniquity of thy sister Sodom, pride, fulness of bread, and abundance of idleness was in her and in her daughters, neither did she strengthen the hand of the poor and needy. And they were haughty, and committed abomination before me: therefore I took them away as I saw good."

As I mentioned above, references to the destruction of Sodom are quite irrelevant when talking about homosexuality, since there is no hint in the Bible that Sodom was destroyed because of homosexual activity. Not taking care of the poor and needy? Yep. Sexual immorality? For sure. But homosexuality? Nope.

Romans 1:26-32, "For this cause God gave them up unto vile affections: for even their women did change the natural use into that which is against nature: And likewise also the men, leaving the natural use of the woman, burned in their lust one toward another; men with men working that which is unseemly, and receiving in themselves that recompence of their error which was meet. Jude 7, "Even as Sodom and Gomorrha, and the cities about them in like manner, giving themselves over to fornication, and going after strange flesh, are set forth for an example, suffering the vengeance of eternal fire."

I am just eternally confused as to why a rational God would, and by extension, its worshippers, actually give a shit as to who is fucking who, and in what orifice, especially between two consenting adults.

I can't believe that some people can be that brainless. Article has not a single citation, what it is pointing to is a complete lie. So Orthodox have been living for centuries and FINALLY some guy in the LJ, whose name is not even known (check who is the author of the article) opens our eyes -))))

Right, please stop it. You wanna marry same sex people - do it. Why do you have to attack Christians? Why do you need writing this lie articles, falsify what we believe in?

Church says its opinion to people who believe in It - you can't have homosexual marriages. That's it. We (Christians) do not write articles around attacking homosexuals. You can't force people not to be homosexual (ok), but you can't force me not believe that homosexuality is immoral and is a great sin in the eye of God.

Gosh Thanks for posting this. I never knew this and it interesting to see that it was infact Rome/The Vatican that issued a decree against same sex unions.... again supporting that there is no explicit words attributed to either God or Jesus to "ban homosexuality" the texts often cited are written by man.....Jesus said to love one another as brothers.... Can't quite see how that can be misconstrued

"The Church" also had loads of people killed at one point. That doesn't mean God sanctioned it.

...Um. That's the kind of god that could probably get behind killing some people. I mean, he was down with stoning people. It's pretty easy to believe that, if he existed, he sanctioned it. God as seen in the Bible is rather bloodthirsty.

Also - do your research before you just grasp something as absolute truth and go around telling other people that this means something. The Bible clearly states that men should not lie with men, period. You already have your info right there.

As a Christian, I've never been taught that homosexuality didn't exist. There are several counts in the Bible where it speaks out against homosexual behavior. Leviticus 18:22 says "you shall not lie with a male as one lies with a female, it is an abomination". Lets also not forget Gods wrath on the unrepented homosexuals in Sodom and Gomorrah. He is the creator and I believe it pains him to see His creation in such despair.

I was 11 years old, in Catholic school. I told the teacher about my girlfriend and was told, explicitly, that people didn't do that. Not "The Bible says...." or even "It's wrong"

"It doesn't happen."

Sooo yeah. I was a very confused 11 year old who was just told she didn't even exist!

I love how there's been concrete evidence refuting the source of the original blog post, in addition to there being zero footnotes or links to some of the claims, yet people insist on commenting "wow, this is great! I will now accept this and use it against the close minded bigots!"

Looks like there's close-minded "lets only read what we *want* to read" folks on both sides of this.
