gendered naming patterns

boom de yada!
A friend of mine just asked an interesting question on his facebook:
Are there any languages/cultures that don't have ANY distinctly gendered naming patterns for people? (Like "female" names ending in vowels, etc)

I have no idea! But I figured somebody here might. Any thoughts?

Thank you!

I'm struggling to think of a boy's name that ends with A that doesn't scream "I'm from a different language/culture" though.

Joshua, Dana (yep, another gender neutral), Sascha (though definitely Russian based), Asa are the ones that I can think of..

Wow. I clicked on this in my email, and my next google ad at the top of my inbox read as follows:

Gorgeous Ukraine Girl - AnastasiaDate.com - 22,000+ Ukraine Girls' Profiles Choose your Perfect Girl & Marry!

I know they pick ads based on email content but dude... that's kind of messed up!

That's disturbing... so glad that I use Thunderbird

Ok, you got me with Joshua! And Dana too I guess...I would assume it was a girl Dana if I just saw it written, though I wouldn't be shocked to see it on a man.

I hear ya! The first couple times I've seen Jodi and Kim on men it's a little weird.

But what about Dana Carvey (or am I just dating myself?)

Dana Carvey would be the reason why I wouldn't be shocked to see it on a man!

Mostly Dana is just a super uncommon name in the UK (I don't think I've ever met or heard of anyone here with that name), so in fact I might actually be inclined to think it was both a girl and a typo of Diana.

Yah, I think that is true for the US as well. I've heard it on two people: Dana Carvey and Dana Delaney (from Desperate Housewives).

...or Dana White from UFC...

No idea who that is.

Luca (though again, Balkans' culture based).

Or Italian!
