Hello all! I'm looking for some recommendations for ethnographies related to present-day city life, youth, or ICT in:
-Rwanda
-Ethiopia
-Kenya
-Lebanon
-Mexico

Any suggestions? I know this is quite broad, so absolutely anything you think might be remotely related would be really appreciated!

How about Nigeria? "Signal and Noise" is an ethnography/history of ICT in Nigeria.

Thank you, will definitely check that out! I'm looking for ethnographies with more of an East African context, but pieces about ICT in other countries could be very useful also.

Try Iraq, Iran, Egypt, Lybia and Bahrain; that would be interesting

How about Mali and Senegal, lots of musical groups come from there, ie. Amadou and Miriam

Kenya university did a study on AIDS that broke the dogma on promiscuous women being carriers, when they came upon a prostitute who seemed to be immune. Grandmothers for Africa are raising funds to help raise orphaned children from deaths of AIDS.

Dare we mention Rwanda, and the Hotel New Hampshire, political genocide, big pharma drug money and health care drug testing like the Constant Gardener.

It all started with diamonds and the slave trade.. but hey what do I know?

Ethiopia is a world renowned fashion center

And South Africa, like District 9 is from outerspace. U2 apartheid.

Does that help at all?

Hi, thanks! I'm not really looking for topics - just ethnographies that deal with modern city life, youth, and/or ICT in the countries I mentioned, or their more general geographic areas. I work for a development organization delivering ICT programs in those countries and am looking for some relevant reading material.

My undergrad adviser, Philip Kilbride, did a good amount of research on street children in Nairobi. I think the book he published on the topic was Street Children in Kenya, there are probably several articles of his floating around as well.
